- Contact the building contractor by phone before every visit. Meet them as soon as you arrive, stay with them at all times and leave together.
- Discuss current danger areas- these will change every day
- Discuss the work currently in progress and the sort of danger it presents.
- Make sure the site is well lit before entering. Do not enter alone.
- Bring your mobile phone- make sure someone knows where you are and what time you are due back.
- Be mindful of your surroundings at all times.
Things to Consider:
- Never bring children to a building site
- Avoid climbing ladders as much as possible. Never climb ad hoc structures, unsecured ladders, scaffolding, or shoring.
- Do not smoke on the site
- Assume that every wire you see is live and will kill you if you touch it
- Assume that floors under construction are unfit for use unless the contractor specifically tells you they are safe
- Never visit a building site at night using flashlights
- Never visit a building site under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Beware of sharp edges, projections and protrusions which may injure you
